Lessons in Prayer

Useful guidelines when conducting Prayer Meetings:

  1. It is often good to open a prayer meeting by reading a short passage of scripture applicable to the goal or occasion, a passage powerful and to the point.
  2. The prayer facilitator should make some short appropriate remarks explaining the nature of prayer and the encouragement we have to pray. The person leading should remind the people of the specific objectives everyone came to pray for.
  3. A prayer meeting should aim Christians at the goal of praying for 1 or 2 specific objectives, not scatter them over a large field.
  4. After defining the objective of prayer, the leader should present a promise or principle, as a reason to expect an answer to their prayers.
  5. Let the people pray who want to pray or if you need to call on individuals to pray, call on those that you know are usually keen so they infuse their spirits into the others.
  6. Prayers should be short. Some spin out a long prayer telling God who or what He is. Some pray forth a whole systematic theology, some preach and some exhort the people until everyone wishes they would stop. They should keep to the point, pray for what they came to pray for.
  7. There must be unity and agreement in the prayer. We should not pray in tongues when someone is praying with their understanding. When one prays and others do not follow their thoughts wander off. Their hearts must join to say “Amen” not only their lips.

Different Types of Prayer

Ephesians 6:18 “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”

Notice that says, “Praying… with ALL power…” The Amplified Bible reads, “Pray… with All [MANNER OF] prayer…”

Another translation reads, “Praying with ALL KINDS of prayer…”

Goodspeed’s translation reads, ”Use EVERY KIND of prayer and entreaty.”

The Bible teaches several kinds of prayer and the different rules governing them:

There are numerous misconceptions in the body of Christ about prayer. Many Christians seem to think, for example, that intercession is the only kind of prayer. Sometimes people say, “God called me to be an intercessor.” No, He did not – He called you to pray all kinds of prayer. Intercession is just one kind.

Some may say, “Oh, but intercession is the most important kind of prayer!” That is not true either. The most important kind of prayer is the kind that the Holy Ghost leads you to pray – the appropriate prayer for the particular situation.

Studying different kinds of prayer helps because it will broaden your understanding and strengthen your faith when you pray. But always remember studying prayer I very different from praying.

These kinds of prayers work together like the fingers of your hand! That is why you can’t be clinical about it just because we categorize for study purposes.

You just have to flow with the Spirit. eg: If the Holy Spirit moves on you to pray and you feel as though you want to weep, don’t try to figure out whether you’re supplicating or interceding. Just weep!

Long before anyone heard the words “supplication” and “intercession”, people were praying those prayers.

Steps to take for Answered Prayer

These are not formulas. They are principles of Prayer. Always remember that your prayer life is a journey to be taken in close fellowship and communion with the precious Holy Spirit. Remember too that you will not become perfect in prayer and faith overnight.

Spiritual growth take time as natural growth does. Your prayer life will grow and develop with patience and diligence.

Here are 7 fundamental aspects of praying – that gets results.

If you faithfully follow these steps in prayer, you can be sure of an answer.
